Immigration Photographs

Photographs are wonderful documents. They show us how things looked in the past, how people dressed, worked, and played. They help us give a face to history. Students have the opportunity to look at and discuss historic photographs showing where immigrants worked and worshipped in Warren County.

PHOTOGRAPHS

1. Show students copies of the photographs. (Found here.) Students may work in cooperative groups.

2. Ask students a series of questions about the photographs they are examining.

Possible Questions for Students:

What does this photograph show?

Why do you think the photographer chose to take this photograph?

Are there any people in this photograph? If so, who do you think they are? Do they know they are being photographed? How can you tell?

If there are people in the photograph, choose one person that you would like to speak with--who would it be? What would you ask him or her?

If there are no people in the photograph, imagine that you are inside the photograph--what are you doing? How do you feel? Would you like to be an immigrant? Why or why not?
